The box office tradition of low ticket sales in the first part of the year continues though business is better than last year
Though Salman Khan's 'Jai Ho' didn't break any records at the box office
this January, overall business at the BO has been better this month.
Kamal Gianchandani of PVR and Cinemax cinemas said, `Overall business in
January this year stands at about 14 percent more than last year Jai Ho
it has met our expectations now.`
The film has touched a total of Rs 102 crore and has got tax exemptions in few states, including Uttar Pradesh.
Other films that released this month and performed well at the box
office are Marathi film 'Timepass', which has collected Rs 30 crore and
Divya Kumar's 'Yaariyaan' which has grossed about Rs 41crore. 'Dedh
Ishqiya' has done a business of about Rs 27 crore and 'Sholay 3D' made
about Rs 11crore. The other disasters of the month were Anuj Saxena's
'Paranthe Wali Gali', Ashim Ahluwalia's critically acclaimed 'Miss
Lovely', Shiv Darshan's debut film 'Karle Pyaar Kar Le' and 'Joe B
Carvalho'.
Trade analyst Amod Mehra said, `The saving grace this month was
'Timepass' and to a certain extent 'Yaariyan' which did decent business
at the box office. 'Jai Ho' fell below our expectations but with last
week's release 'One By Two' failing to impress audiences, 'Jai Ho'
attracted some more cinemagoers.`
