Google’s Android L preview was more than just a new twist on how we look at the next version of the OS. By releasing the early preview of the OS, it allowed developers to look at the styles and themes associated with Material Design and prepare their apps for the experience. Apparently, behind the scenes, this early preview also allowed OEMs the ability to make sure their flagship smartphones are ready to update much faster than previous OS updates. For the first time in the history of Android, it looks like the L release might not be so terribly marred by months of delays while manufacturers like Samsung prepare for their own updates.
The next version of Android is going to be a big one. Google has radically changed their design language, opened the doors to hundreds of new APIs, and created an all new environment for developers and manufacturers alike to play in. We don’t even know when Google is planning to announce the next version of Android, but the seemingly endless stream of leaks for the Nexus 6 suggests we’ll see it within the next couple of weeks. We’ve got plenty of hints about what the experience will be like thanks to the developer preview, but thanks to Samsung we know what Android L will look like after it is prepared for TouchWiz.
There’s obviously no release date or anything associated with this leak, but as you can see this is already very close to a complete thought. Additionally, for TouchWiz, this UI doesn’t look half bad with Material Design themes. If Samsung is this far along, than it’s likely we’ll see updates to the Galaxy S5 and other flagship smartphones much faster than previous updates. There are still things like carrier approval that need to happen, but even with those delays the wait for Android L on flagship hardware could be reduced to weeks instead of months.
